The Seagate for Mac

Looking for reviews on the best external hard drive for Mac we couldn’t help but stumble across the seagate for Mac. And really, I don’t mean this in a good way. It’s become a pretty popular external hard drive and it’s considered a ‘breakout’ by Google in terms of popularity but honestly we can’t understand why. Take a look at our full review on the Seagate Mac external hard drive if or you can have a look at the hard drive itself if you prefer.

Ok so coming from someone who reviews hard drives you can take my word on this – so many of them are the exact same. Over and over and over again. There’s really not that much more they can do with external hard drives other than start installing digital cameras in with them or something. They could increase the capacity but then the price would be too high and nobody would want it.

I look at a lot of external hard drive mac compatible devices and I have to pick some of the best to suggest as the best external hard drive for Mac or good for a specific task but there’s so many of them which are basically the same but they cost a little to much or transfer a little too slow. The Seagate Freeagent Mac drive is one such hard drive.

Seagate for Mac External Hard Drive

It’s not that the bad and the Seagate mac compatible devices are not in the ‘junk’ pile in my opinion but they don’t offer anything more than hard drives cheaper than them. So getting one is paying extra and getting less features. If you look at the list of our top rated hard drives you’ll see hard drives which are cheaper, better quality and more popular than the Seagate Mac range.

The Seagate Mac software is apparently pretty good although I haven’t tried it myself, it does promote itself as ready for the Apple TimeMachine. And maybe that’s why it became so popular but that’s not a good enough reason when you can get better from cheaper hard drives. I don’t even think this one looks better visually than a lot of the hard drives out there.

A lot of the best external hard drive for Mac models we’ve look at in the past offer their own backup system and will work with the Apple Time Machine no problem. But for the people who are not to sure about this, perhaps Seagate seems like a safe choice. Well, it’s not the right choice.

The SeaGate for Mac does not support the newest USB standard and I looked through the Seagate Goflex Mac range and couldn’t understand why it was so expensive. I still don’t. There is an option (at a higher price of course) to upgrade the drive from ‘drive only’ and get a USB 3.0 adapter base. So you’re looking at an already expensive hard drive, with the option of making it even more expensive… to get the features of something much cheaper. Right. I do like the idea of the illuminated capacity gauge which can show you how much room is left on your hard drive. But considering the very rare times you would actually need to use it, it’s certainly not worth the massive price hike.

I saw an advert for the Seagate Freeagent Goflex and you have to admit that’s a pretty good name. I has that ‘cool’ factor as much as any external hard drive really can. It has some nice looking ads but really, that’s all it has. There’s not much information given about drop protection or warranties while other hard drive manufacturers boast that their hard drive won’t break – the Seagate for Mac range might be betting on it breaking so you have to pay their hyped up prices more than once.

Get the Seagate for Mac

Now they’re still good quality drives (compared against a lot of the bad external hard drives out there) and if you want one then by all means go for it. You can hit the yellow button above or below to get the full details over on Amazon but there’s better choices. And if you’re looking for the Seagate Mac compatible drives then you’re probably looking at them because of their adverts rather than performance. Basically the Seagate for Mac range have nothing more fancy than their advertising and their price range, you can get better for cheaper (just look at our list on the top right).
