Is it The Best External Hard Drive for Mac?
Well like we said it’s missing a few features that other drives have (such as USB 3.0 and compatibility with PCs) but if you’re just looking to use it with your Mac then it’s still fast enough for average use, it’s got loads of capacity and it does have a good track record for reliability (which is the first thing I look for in an external hard drive these days since there are so many cheap brands around). It’s easy to use (just plug it in and go) so there’s none of this tinkering around to try and set it up.
The only thing I don’t like about it is the fact it’s Mac only. I like to be able to move files between my Mac and PC, but I can still do this over my network at least. It also doesn’t have USB 3.0 but then again most people don’t even have a USB 3.0 slot in their desktop/laptop yet so that’s not really a huge deal. And 2.0 is still easily fast enough to be honest. It is powered by a power supply which means an extra cable to carry around and if you’re using it on a Macbook you’ll need to have a separate plug.
There are several USB powered external hard drives we review if you’re looking for something a little more flexible but there are plenty of people using the Iomega with their Macbook happily enough, it’s a great match for a desktop though.
It’s a great drive at a great price and especially if you’re just looking for something to work with your Mac, it’s worth taking a look at. It’s certainly a for-runner in our search for the best external hard drive for mac.
