Normally we focus on reviews for the best external hard drive for mac, but in this case we think we’ve found the best external hard drive which works for both Apple Macs and Windows PCs. It is another Western Digital, and we’ve reviewed some of their other external hard drive models in the past but it’s hard to ignore them when they’re making the most popular makes around. I always say it’s important to get other opinions when you’re buying electronics and who am I to listen to about hard drives? I dropped my main external hard drive down two flights of stairs (to be fair it still works just fine, so maybe I do know how to pick ‘em) but regardless, this one has a few thousand positive reviews so it must be doing something right. It compares very well compared to pretty much any other external hard drive.
Is it The Best External Hard Drive?
So I’ve mentioned pretty often the kinds of things I look for if I want the best external hard drive and if this is the best external hard drive review, what makes it such?
Pure simplicity and security.
The thing I love about this drive is it doesn’t come loaded with any software or problems like others do, there’s no complications or problems. You plug it in, and start copying your files. In a world where everything is becoming more complicated (heck my fridge has even started talking to me) it’s nice to have something which works easily without any problems. I also look for the most reliable external hard drive I can find, I really hate the idea of losing data and low quality hard drives can die and take everything with them. WD are well known for their long lasting quality hard drives.
Aside from that I can’t argue with the capacity, plenty of choices with everything from 500 GB all the way up to 3 TB and the price is lower than most alternatives of lesser quality. It’s a great package at a low price and I’ve come to expect nothing less from WD at this point.
The one and only problem I have with it, is it’s a little bigger than some others and it’s powered by an AC adapter. That means it needs to be plugged into the wall as well as your computer which is fine if you’re using a desktop or something but it might not be the best external hard drive for laptops for example. If you’re looking for something a little more suited to laptops have a look at THIS instead.
Other than that, I feel pretty confident saying this is easily one of the best external hard drive models around and should certainly be at the top of the list.
